Berry enlisted 5/15/1861 at Greenville, SC into 1st SC Artillery and served in
Companies G,D,F. He was captured at Bentonsville, NC (B.D. Derum) 3/22/1865.
Transferred to Virginia then to Hart's Island Concentration Camp, New York Harbor
on 4/7/1865. Transferred 6/30/1865 to Davids Island, NY Harbor and entered DeCamp
General Hospital. He died 7/3/1865 of disease and was buried in what is now the
Union Grounds of the Cypress Hills National Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings, NY. From
what I understand he is interred under the name of Perry Durn or Berry Drum in
plot no. 3089. He is also filed under Benjamin Durham as well. Berry is my third
great grandfather.
In the 1860 Census for Pickens County, South Carolina (Regiment 5), William
Hollingsworth, age 66, is listed in the household of Berry Durham and wife Jane. Berry
DURHAM and Jane E. HOLLINGSWORTH were married about 1848 in South Carolina.2 Jane E.
HOLLINGSWORTH was born about 1827 in South Carolina.2,8 Berry DURHAM
and Jane E. HOLLINGSWORTH had the following children:
