was a soldier in the Confederate Army. He drew a pension from the State of Tennessee.
He was captured just after Grant took Lookout Valley, just before the Battle
of Lookout Mountain. John lived on Pan Gap Road in Tiftonia, TN, and was at home
on convalescent leave from the Confederate Army Field Hospital in Ringgold, Ga.
He was shot in the thigh in the Battle of the Wilderness. He spent the remainder
of the war as a POW in Ohio. He was in the 4th GA Cavalry, under the command
of Nathan Bedford Forrest.
I have a copy of his pension application from the TN state archive. The problem
with researching the Durham family in the Chattanooga area, is that they were
notorious about naming their children Daniel, John, Eli, and Ennis. In the pension
application, John mentions that he had two daughters, and I don't see any mention
of them on your page. From what my father tells me, his daughters both we pregnant
with Yankee soldiers, but they didn't marry. Undoubtedly, the kept the Durham
name. From the best I can tell, they moved to DeKalb County, Alabama. Sometimes,
there would be two or three males in a family with the name Daniel, John, and
Stephen Prescott Durham, USMC Retired
