Durham - Obituary Harvey Franklin Durham, 85, of Bland, the Mechanicsburg community, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 9, 2010, from the Bland County Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Bastian. Funeral service was held Saturday, June 12, at 11 a.m. at A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Shortridge officiating. Interment was in the Mechanicsburg Cemetery. He was born Feb. 1, 1925, in Burkes Garden, the oldest son and third child of the late John Harve and Roxie Vencill Durham. He was a longtime caregiver to his late parents for several years. He was a member of Byrnes Chapel United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg. He served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed throughout Europe during World War II. After his military service, he worked at Celanese Corp. in Narrows until retirement. His hobbies consisted of outdoor projects such as tree grafting and planting unusual species of fruit and nut trees in his orchards. He loved to give seeds, plants and trees to friends who came to visit. His philosophy of life was simple, "Using and making do with what you have." Being quiet and reserved, his thinking was "deep" and his advice generous and forthcoming to his sisters and brothers. He was preceded in death by a sister, Alleta Blankenship. Survivors include two brothers and six sisters, Edith Melvin, June Sands, Paul Durham, Frances Strock, Virginia Baisden, Yvonne Bowman, John Durham and Evelyn Ballard; and a host of nieces and nephews who helped with his care while he was still at home. The family appreciates the special caregivers at the nursing home and the staff of Hospice of Southwest Virginia for making his days brighter and more comfortable. Family members served as pallbearers. A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home in White Gate was in charge of the arrangements.
