August 20, 1940 - Family History of Tom Durham, As compiled through research and memory of E. W. (Bud) Durham and Charlie J. Durham, Sons of Tom Durham, Courtesy of Elaine Durham Lee:

"Our great grandfather's name was Thomas Durham and his wife's, Lucy. He had six sons; Aaron, John, Thomas, Matthew, Isley and Izra Durham. (The foregoing record was taken from Thomas and Lucy Durham's will dated 1823 and is recorded in Orange County Court House that they will some land to their six boys.)
The following account was acquired by us through memory and also by personal contact with some of the aged residents of Orange and Alamance Counties. Matthew Durham, our grandfather, served the trade of blacksmith at Antioch, in Orange County. He was married three times. No record of the names of his first two wives has been found. He had one son by his first wife named Elishey, who married Mary Roach in 1847. Elishey and Mary had three sons; John, Tom and Bill, and also three girls; Mamie, Margaret and Martha.
Matthew Durham had four girls by his second wife; Alpha, Nancy, Polly and Ann.
On September 29, 1846 he married Matilda Willis and they had two sons; Joe and Tom and also three girls; Betty, Sally and Matilda.
Our father, Tom Durham was born October 3, 1850. He was first married to Martha J. Cates on May 13, 1873 at Saxapahaw, N.C. They had 7 sons, namely; J. Cicero, Edward W., Charles J., William T. , Berry W., and two that died in infancy. They also had three daughters; Mamie E. Sallie (who died at the age of eighteen months) and Lottie (who died at the age of six weeks).
For a period of years Tom Durham managed C. C. Moore's stock farm at Cedar Cliff, N.C. After removal of the stock farm to Charlotte, N.C. he served as dairyman for Mr. June Hardin at Big Falls, N.C. It was while he was at Big Falls that his first wife, Martha J. Cates Durham, died on June 27, 1890.
While still at Big Falls he was married to Florence Rippy, his second wife, in fall of1891. They had two sons; Walter M. and Irvin, and also three daughters; Mattie, Lona and Florence.
He later moved to West Burlington and was employed at Elmira Cotton Mills.
After retirement from active work he died at his residence on Durham Street, July 5, 1920.
