William Richard Durham, Sr., was small in stature, with red hair. He earned the
reputation of a drinker after the death of Julia Crenshaw. He was a well-respected
Physician with an office in Dawson, Ga., and a practice that included a portion
of Alabama. He enlisted in the 5th Regiment, Dawson, GA Volunteers, on May 11,
1861, and earned an impressive war record. He also served in the Army of Northern
Virginia and fought in Virginia's major battles and valley wars. He served at
Cedar Creek, Bristow, Mannassas, Chantilly and Strasburg. He was a prisoner of
war for ten days, was exchanged at Lookout Mountain, and surrendered to Brig.
Gen. E.M. McCook by Maj Gen. Sam Jones (CSA) in Tallahassee, Florida. He was
paroled in Albany, GA. on July 15, 1865. After his discharge, he started a fight
with a much larger man and couln't win, so he shot him. He was jailed, but allowed
out to tend patients. One day he was met by a woman as he went on a call. She
gave him a horse and supplies to escape. He fled to Texas, and en route, changed
his name from William Richard Durham to William Richard with ink eradicator on
his medical license. Once in Texas, he took another wife, began another family,
and set up another practice. After his death, Sarah Richards, (wife #3), battled
with Mary E. Durham, (wife #2) over his estate. Facts about this person: Occupation
