WESTFIELD, NC ~ Mrs. Ethel Durham Collins, age 91, of Horseshoe Road, Westfield (Francisco Community), passed away Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, at Stokes-Reynolds Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, she was born March 8, 1915, to the late Joseph and Mary Cardwell Durham. Mrs. Collins was a retired farmer, homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed working in her flowers and gardening and took great pride in her two grandsons, who she loved so much.

Survivors are a loving and devoted husband of 69 years, Guy Collins of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Marion George of Westfield; Two grandsons, Travis Gammons and wife, Julie, Shannon Gammons and wife, Ramona; two step grandchildren, Sharon McBride and Ricky George; three step great-grandchildren; and a step great-great-granddaughter; two special sisters, Alma (Dan) George and Rachel (Hassel) Hunter; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Collins was preceded in death by three sisters Hallie (Hickman) Simmons, Ina (Hershel) Slawter and Irene (John) Lindamood, and a brother, Otis Durham.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at Howell-Nelson Funeral Chapel of Pilot Mountain, with the Rev. Rickey Rogers and the Rev. Tracey Collins officiating. Interment will follow at Big Creek Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends today, Nov. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Howell-Nelson Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Big Creek Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Barbara Wright, 3660 Horseshoe Road, Westfield, NC 27053. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Larry and Sandy Francis for all their kindness and care shown to Mom and Dad; a sincere thank you to all the staff at Stokes-Reynolds Skilled Nursing Unit, who expressed such kindness, love and took good care of our loved one and to Dr. Sam Newsome.

WESTFIELD, NC ~ James Guy Collins, 90, of Westfield (Francisco community) passed peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2007, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Marion George, with his daughter by his side. Mr. Collins was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ethel Durham Collins; and parents Fletcher Ernest and Ada Harris Collins. He leaves to cherish his precious memories his daughter Brenda (Marion) George; two grandsons, Travis Gammons and wife Julie and Shannon Gammons; a loving brother, Gaither Collins of Clemmons; several nieces and nephews; a very devoted little companion puppy, Penny; a step granddaughter; a step grandson; three step great-grandchildren; and two step great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Collins was a retired tobacco farmer. He was a very kind and gentle man who never spoke a harsh word about anyone. He really loved bluegrass music, square dancing and fishing. His main interest was with his two grandsons and going to sporting events; he was their proudest and most faithful fan. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at Francisco Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Doug Brinkley, the Rev. Rickey Rogers and the Rev. Tracey Collins officiating. Burial will be in Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today, Dec. 27, at Francisco Presbyterian Church. Special thanks to Francisco Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.
