OAK RIDGE, NC ~ Rachel Hunter passed away at home, with her children at her side,
on Wednesday, July 15, 2009. She was born April 16, 1911, one of six daughters
and one son of Mary and Joseph Durham. She was preceded in death by her husband
William Hassell Hunter in 1974.
She is survived by one sister, Alma Durham George of Westfield, NC, many nieces
and nephews, Son, W.H. (Bill) Hunter, Jr. and wife Faye Hunter of Pilot Mountain,
NC, Daughter, Carole Hunter of Oak Ridge, NC., one grandson, Jeff Hunter and
Patrina Moore, great-grandson, Braiden Hunter of Pilot Mountain, NC, two step-grandsons,
Gordon and Pam Myers, and Burley Myers of Hamptonville, NC. Rachel Hunter and
her Husband, Hassell owned and ran Hunters' Barbecue in Pilot Mountain for eight
years, a popular eating place for young and old alike for the local community
of Pilot Mountain and surrounding areas. Following her husband's death in 1974,
Rachel took up interior decorating and worked for a relative in the paint business.
She moved from her farm home of forty plus years to live on Dodson Mill Road
in Pilot Mountain.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Pilot Mountain. In her later
years, she suggested to her beloved Minister, Jesse Bledsoe that a daytime Bible
study be started for Seniors. She attended those Wednesday sessions until her
91st year when she moved to Heritage Greens Retirement Community in Greensboro
in 2002. She moved to The Stratford Retirement Independent Living Facility in
High Point in 2006 and to the home of her Daughter in Oak Ridge in September
2008. Howell-Nelson Funeral Service of Pilot Mountain is in charge of services
for the family.
There will be a visitation Saturday morning, July 18, 2009 at 10:00 a.m., followed
by a graveside service at 11:00 a.m. at the Pilot Mountain City Cemetery. The
Reverend Kristi Rolison, Minister of the First Presbyterian Church of Pilot Mountain
will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian
Church of Pilot Mountain, PO Box 1209, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041.
