Claudia,
I was given your address by Gary Williams, and also found it on Rootsweb. Thank
you for all the time you took to enter the information on the web. I am trying
to prove that George M Douglas, b around 1808 and died 1856, was the son of George
Douglas and Elizabeth Williams. I have seen it in several postings, but have
not been able to document it. By the way, George and Elizabeth's children are
not listed correctly. Hiram Thomas was their grandson, not son. He was the son
and first child of George M and Martha Snow, born in 1850. Martha was married
first to George, then to John Durham in 1859, then to John Hogue in 1889. Hiram
is my gggrandfather and is buried next to his mother, Martha, in Casey Co. If
you have any documentation of a connection between the 2 Georges, I would appreciate
hearing about where to locate it.
Thanks so much.

A conversation between Linda Carroll and Byron Durham
(From Linda.............)
A cousin of mine, intent on finding the Snow connection, received some papers
from an Irene Jagger who lives in Kentucky. First of all Martha Ann could not
have been the daughter of Mary Hannah East, since she and Martin did not marry
until 1835. Martin and his first wife, Polly, did have a daughter named Martha,
but she married a man named Austin in 1849 in Lincoln County, about the same
time Martha Ann was marrying George Douglas in Casey County. Do you have any
idea where researchers got the maiden name Snow?
-------------------------
(From Byron...........)
I have updated my information showing Martha Ann Snow as a daughter of Martin
Snow and Polly Garvin. This update may not have yet appeared at Ancestry.com
but does appear at Rootsweb. I have Martha Ann Snow marrying (1) George Matthew
Douglas around 1848; and (2) John Lee Durham on 17 Nov. 1859.

Added note: Martha Ann (Snow) did marry a third time to John M. Hogue on 15 December

KY, living with her daughter, Margaret (Durham) Morgan and her husband Madison
G. Morgan.

Unfortunately, further investigation of the information sent on the Martin Snow
family - Polly and Mary - indicates that the Martha Ann Snow who married John
Durham could not be the daughter of Martin Snow by any wife. His daughter Polly
Ann Snow married John Douglas in Lincoln County in 1846. His daughter Martha
A (Adaline) married John Austin in Lincoln County in 1849. That is about the
time Martha Ann was marrying George Douglas in Casey County. Do you have an official
record of the marriage between George and Martha?

I don't have an official marriage record of George Douglas and Martha Snow, but

Can you give me actual documentation that your Martha (Adeline) Snow was a daughter
of Martin Snow? If you have this documentation, then I would know for sure that
our Martha Snow isn't a daughter of Martin Snow. Thanks.
Do you have a first name? I don't know who I'm talking with.

This is my [Linda Carroll] attempt to translate the Snow papers February 24,
2010. Unfortunately, it is the Martha Ann Snow who married John Lee Durham who
is my ancestor, so we are having to start again finding her father. I think it
is Noah Snow, brother to Martin (see bond below). He was in Casey County for
the 1830 census (year she would have been born).
All the records are from Lincoln County. [Actually, I am not sure this bond record
is.]

Hi Linda,
Some pretty good stuff here. This does make it quite confusing which Martha A.
Snow is actually the daughter of Martin Snow. Doesn't it?
NOTES to consider:
I checked for George Douglas and Martha A. (Snow) Douglas in the 1850 Census
for Casey County, Kentucky. They are living in District 1 - image 48 (Ancestry.com).
They have one child - Hiram T, age 1 month old. This census was taken on 7 September
1850. I noticed your listings here:
------------
Kentucky Lincoln County Sct.
February term 1834
On the motion of Martin Snow ordered that he be the appointed guardian to John
M Snow, Elizabeth Jane Snow, Isaac Snow, William -- Snow, Polly Ann Snow, Martha
Snow, David F. Snow, Elvira Abigail Snow children of Polly Snow decd. whereupon

-------------
Court Order Book 1850

of Martin Snow - James G(?) Snow, Archib(ald) G(?) Snow, John M. Snow, Elizabeth
Jane Snow, Isaac F. Snow, William S(?) Snow, Mary Ann(?) Snow, Martha Ann Snow,
David Frank(?) Snow, Elvira Snow.
-------------
If Martha Ann Snow is married to George Douglas in the 1850 Census (Casey County),
then she most likely would not have been listed in the Court Order Book (Lincoln
County), unless this event happened before the 1850 Census (September 1850).
The listings above does show "Martha Ann Snow" listed as a child of
Martin Snow, but he was given guardianship in 1834. So you appear to be correct
in your assumption that Martin Snow is not the father of Martha Ann Snow.
There is a Nancy Snow, age 55, listed as "Farm Widow" in the same county
(Casey County) as George Douglas and wife, Martha, but living in District 2 -
image 3 (Ancestry.com). This Nancy Snow is listed with Thomas Snow, age 28 and
Noah Snow, age 15. Is this "Nancy Snow" the "widow" of Noah
Snow?
Nancy Snow also appears in the 1840 Census for Casey County, KY, but doesn't
show any young females and only one young male, between the age of 5-10. This
could be the young "Noah Snow" listed in the 1850 census.
Just a few things to consider. More research is needed.
Byron K. Durham
-------------------------------------
(From Linda..........)
Some thoughts on Martha Ann SNOW. I have been adding to this as information is
gathered. The glitch in the Noah and Nancy connection is that Nancy did not have
a daughter with her in 1840 when Martha Ann would only have been 10. However,
Nancy continually shows up in Casey County as the only Snow old enough to be
Martha Ann's parent.
There were no SNOW families in Casey County in the 1810 and 1820 censuses.
In the 1830 Casey County census -- the year Martha Ann was presumed to be born
-- there is a Noah SNOW with 1 male 0-4, 2 males 5-9, 1 male 40-49, 1 female
0-4 and 1 female 30-39.
[Noah Snow married to Nancy supposedly died 1846.]
In the 1840 Casey County census -- the only SNOW is Nancy -- a female 30-39 with
1 male 5-9.
The only Noah Snow I could find was in Morgan Co., IN -- 1 male 10-15, 1 male
20-30 and 1 female 15-20.
Martha Ann married about 1849 to George Douglas, probably in Casey County.
The daughters of Martin Snow:
Polly Ann Snow married John Douglas in Lincoln County in Sep 1846 and Martha
Adaline Snow married John Austin in Lincoln County in Sep 1849.
In the 1850 Casey County census - George Douglas 42
Martha Douglas 20
Hiram T. Douglas 0
In the 1850 Casey County census - Nancy Snow 55 [The only Snow old enough to
be a parent to 20 year old Martha.]
Thomas Snow 28
Doah Snow 15 [It does look like it starts with a D, but I am guessing Noah.]
Martha Ann Douglas's marriage to John S. Durham is listed as both 17 Nov 1857
and 17 Nov 1859.

The Court Order Book of 1850 bothered me because almost all of these "infants"
are married by 1850. And if Martin was granted guardianship of his children in
1834 when did this James McKinney get custody? However, since we have proven
Martin was not our Martha Ann Snow's father, I'll let someone else worry about
it.
-------------------------------------------------------
(From Linda.....)
Correction: Martha Adaline Snow married James Austin, not John Austin.
-------------------------------------------------------
(From Byron............)
Hi Linda,
I am taking notice of this source:
-----------
Kentucky Lincoln County Sct.
February term 1834
On the motion of Martin Snow ordered that he be the appointed guardian to John
M Snow, Elizabeth Jane Snow, Isaac Snow, William -- Snow, Polly Ann Snow, Martha
Snow, David F. Snow, Elvira Abigail Snow children of Polly Snow decd. whereupon
the said Martin Snow with John E Wright, Bennet C. Wright and Benjamin -----
his security ---- bond in the penalty of four hundred & fifty dollars with
a proper condition--
James Snow and Archibald Snow children of Polly Snow deceased who are over fourteen
years of age came into court and made choice of Martin Snow as their guardian
whereupon the said Martin Snow with John E Wright, Bennet G. Wright and Benjamin
Duncan his securities --- bond in the penalty of one hundred and fifty dollars,
with a proper condition.
------------
It is evident that the children all belong to "Polly Snow, deceased".
Therefore the Nancy Snow in the 1840 and 1850 Census is not the mother of these
children. So either these children are from Martin Snow and "Polly"
(Garvin) Snow, or they are from another "Polly Snow", wife of another
Snow relative. Obviously not "Frostin Snow" since his WILL shows that
his wife's name is "Ruth".

THIS CAME FROM PATTY BLACK OF CASEY CO, KENTUCKY
Jackie, I dont know about the children of Martha Ann Snow, as that is
not my line, but I do know that George W. Douglas was married to Martha A. /Martha
Ann Snow and that she was the daughter of Martin Snow. The excerpts of the records
show that. As to the Martha that married an Austin, she was Martha Adaline Snow,
the daughter of Lewis Snow and Jane Richards. Bond of James W. Austin to marry
Martha Adaline Snow, with William Fletcher as surety, September 27. 1849. Consent
of Jane Snow for her daughter, September 26, 1849, witnessed by Joseph F. Fletcher
and William Fletcher. (The Fletchers were cousins.)
According to the census, Noah may have had one daughter, but she must have died
young before marrying age, as she was not on the next census and not mentioned
in the case files. Noah and his wife divorced in 1838. I said may have had a
daughter, as this could be the census taker error or just a female in the household
that was not a daughter. The only Snows living in Casey or Lincoln County (from
tax records) at the time of Marthas birth [ca. 1830] are Lewis, Martin,
Frost (the father), and Noah.
We know the names of the children of these Snows and Lewis and Martin had daughters
named Martha. We know Lewis Snows Martha married the Austin. Martins
daughter Martha married George W. Douglas and Martins daughter and, therefore,
Marthas sister Polly Ann married John Douglas, brother to George. As to
whether the children marrying in one county or another, that is not a real factor.
As I said in my last email, the families were in one county or another and lived
on the county line. Many families have children that married in both counties.
In fact, I have one instance that they got the bond in Lincoln County and it
is recorded there, but the actual marriage is recorded in Casey County. If the
Irene mentioned in the email is Irene Jaggers, I am acquainted with her. In fact,
I have shared my research with her. My husband has the Richards, Durham, and
Austin lines and I have the Douglas, Snow, Austin, Durham, and Fletcher lines,
so I have researched all these lines quite a bit. I am well acquainted with the
records in both Casey and Lincoln, as I have researched for myself and did professional
genealogical research for others and, in the past, answered the genealogical
mail for both Casey and Lincoln County Clerks. I havent researched the
Buis line, as I dont have that line in my direct line. Other than this,
I dont know what to tell you.
It seems to me that there isnt any question concerning this, but who knows.
I agree that one should be cautious and get all the facts. If you decide this
is yours and want me to share info, let me know. Also, let me know if you need
anything else or have more questions.
