Descendants of William Durham, son of William Durham/Temperanace Box John, James W. & Stephen T. originally enlisted on Union side in March of 1863 in Jackson Co., KY, mustered in 19 Sep 1864 at Camp Nelson, Garrard Co. Stephen T. was rejected by the mustering officer because he was under age (he gave his age as 19). He was mustered in and accepted at Somerset, KY on 3 Nov 1863 (age at this time is given as 18). All 3 boys re-enlisted in Apr 1864 at Camp Burnside, Pulaski Co. and ordered to Louisville to be mustered into 7 Ky Cav. for three years service. On the enlistment certificates, John & James have dark eyes, dark hair, dark complexion. Stephen T. has blue eyes, light hair, light complexion. All 3 list place of birth as Laurel Co. There is also James H Durham enlisting & serving in the very same units as the 3 brothers. 1900 War Eagle Twp., Benton Co., MO: James W Durham, born 1842 in KY, widowed is living with Wm. H & Louisa Elkins, born in KY, listed as their UNCLE. Sarah Elkins listed as MOTHER, b. 1829 KY, widowed. Civil War pension record states James W. Durham died 13 Jul 1915 in War Eagle, Ark.
