Subject: Bate vs. Bates

Byron,
Nick names were a common occurrence in large families. The Durham family had their fair share. From the information I have gathered William Bate Durham was known as “Bates” while he was in Sumner County. The obituary in the Sumner Co. publication for his wife Armiza Brown was listed as “Mrs. Bates Durham”. In a personal paper of his, he refers to himself at Bates. But that name did not follow him out West.

Once heading west he uses William B. and Will B. His name is listed as William Bate on birth records in Hopkins County, TX. Based on his application of two birth certificates in Texas his formal name should be listed as William Bate Durham in your Durham data base.

Again, thank you for your work with tracking the Durham family.

Byron,
Thank goodness, almost 100 years ago, someone wrote a descriptive obituary with a helpful explanation. See Obituary above. Anglea is/was a small community outside of Gallatin, TN. Her place of death is "near Anglea"...according to her obit. (Joe Durham was her brother-in-law.)

"In the 1910 Census for Sumner County, Tennessee (Civil District 14 - District 144), James Durham, age 70 and "widowed", is listed in the household of Joe J. Durham and wife Ida P."
